| You may be surprised to discover that the nation’s most-visited national park is located right here in Tennessee. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park receives about nine million visitors a year. One of its main attractions is the sense of sanctuary the park preserves in the midst of so many population centers. Scientists estimate that the park is home to 100,000 different species.Many historic structures, such as settlers’ homes, churches, schools and barns, have been preserved in the park as well. More reasons to visit the park can be found within just a few miles.
Gatlinburg features a ski resort among other activities, and Pigeon Forge’s Dollywood is only a short drive away. The amusement park, originally called Rebel Railroad, first opened in 1961 with a steam train, general store, blacksmith shop and saloon. Today, Dollywood is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in the state of Tennessee. The park welcomes 2.4 million people annually. They are drawn by great rides like The Thunderhead and a wide variety of live shows. But Dollywood is much more than an ordinary amusement park. It features traditional crafts and themed shops and hosts five of the South’s largest festivals.
