Tarantino's Tennessee
Text Chris McCoy
Legendary video store clerk turned Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino grew up in Southern California, but he has hidden Tennessee roots. The director of Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown was born on March 27, 1963 to Connie Zastopuphil, a nurse and healthcare executive, and Tony Tarantino, an actor and musician, in Knoxville. Although he spent very little of his early life here, sly references to the Volunteer State are peppered throughout his films. The climactic, over-the-top car chase in 2007’s Grindhouse: Death Proof, for example, takes place in the hills around Lebanon—although in true Hollywood fashion the sequence was actually shot in the hills of Southern California.

Trivia question:
In which of Tarantino’s films does Bruce Willis utter the line “The next time we talk, I’ll be on Knoxville time”?

Answer:
Pulp Fiction
