Over Easy
Text Jennifer Valentine Illustration Matthew Lunn
Did you know that an egg cooks at 158 degrees? On July 13, 1980, Memphis sidewalks were only 50 degrees short of frying up an omelet. The temperature on this sizzling day reached a record high of 108 degrees - the hottest day in Tennessee history. In fact, from July 6 - 20 there was a fifteen-day stretch of temperatures above 100 degrees. These sweltering temperatures were a part of the 1980 heat wave that poached the Southeast, causing billions of dollars worth of damage to agriculture. This heat wave was one of the most devastating natural disasters in terms of deaths and destruction in U.S. history.

Question: What are the symptoms of heat stroke?

Answer: Tennesseans need to take precautions to pretect themselves against heat-related illnesses during the hot month of July. Symptoms of heat stroke include body temperatures above 103 degrees Fahrenheit; red, hot and dry skin without sweating; a strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea and loss of consciousness.
