Nobel Tennesseans
Halley Johnson

Two Nobel Peace Prize winners have called the town of Carthage (population: 2,251) home. Cordell Hull won the honor in 1945, and Albert Gore, Jr. won in 2007. Gore, who received the prize in conjunction with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and former U.S. Secretary of State Hull, who received the prize for his efforts in establishing the United Nations, have more than a coincidental connection. Gore, who has mentioned several times that he was greatly influenced by Hull, was instrumental in the construction of the Cordell Hull Museum, now part of Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park.
