During the 1828 presidential campaign, rumors surfaced calling Andrew Jackson's wife, Rachel Donaldson Jackson, a bigamist. In 1790, after Donaldson's first husband initiated divorce proceedings, she traveled out of Tennessee to visit friends. In 1791, Jackson and Donaldson moved to Nashville together, supposedly married. Though records of this marriage have never been found, Donaldson's first husband, Lewis Robards, used bigamy charges to finalize the divorce he had initiated years earlier. Jackson went on to win the presidential race and serve two terms, but his beloved Rachel died of heart complications soon after the election. Trivia Question: Answer: |
