Let it Snow! On December 31, 1963, a huge snowstorm blew across the South from Mobile, Alabama, to southern Maryland, killing three people, causing power outages and indelibly freezing its memory in minds throughout the region. On New Year’s Day, 1964, many Tennessee cities woke up to record snowfall levels. Among the single-day snowfall records broken were Shelbyville, with nine inches; Lebanon, Linden and Old Hickory Dam, 10 inches; Coldwater, 10.5 inches; Centerville, Fayetteville and Neapolis, 11 inches; Pulaski, 11.5 inches; Lewisburg, 12.5 inches; Ashwood, 14 inches; Columbia and Mount Pleasant, 15 inches; Waynesboro, 15.5 inches and Lawrenceburg, 16 inches. Trivia Question: What is the record for the greatest single-day snowfall in Tennessee? Answer: 20.8 inches, March 18, 1936 Elizabethton. |
