The Hermitage
Text: Josh Fussell

The Hermitage was not always a mansion in the suburbs of Nashville.  The original Hermitage was a small farmhouse that was a part of the property acquired by Andrew Jackson.  Jackson lived in the farmhouse with his family until he built the mansion in 1821.  Originally, Jackson’s home was a very different place than the mansion that more than 15 million visitors have explored. The initial construction included only the central core of the house, but during his presidency, Jackson had the house renovated, adding two wings and a front portico.  The mansion’s Greek Revival style is the result of a second renovation to repair damage done by a chimney fire in 1834.
